One of the most important steps to creating a successful website, is the very first thing you will do, choosing a domain name. 

What is a domain name?

A domain name is essentially your 'physical' address on the internet, or a phone number if you will. It is a location on the internet that people go to find you. Our domain name is mjgmarketing.com. When you want to find us, you enter in our domain name, when you want to go to cnn, you go to cnn.com.  

So now that you know what a domain name is, let's move on to why it's so important.  Off the bat, one may think it's not so important because you could just tell people where to go to find you right?  WRONG.  Choosing your domain name is one of the most important steps because once you've developed your website, you're going to want to drive traffic and market your site.  As a result, I'm not going to buy a domain name of mattswebsite.com when I want to sell a specific item or I'm catering to a specific audience.

After you've compiled a list of possible domain names for your website, it's time to go and check to see if they're available. Wesuggest godaddy.com.  Godaddy.com is a domain registrar, which essentially means, this is where you go to buy your domain.  So, once you head over there, you'll see a text field with a search box saying "start your domain search. " 

Go ahead and type your first choice for your domain name, if you look below, you'll see I've searched for MJGMarketing.com and obviously, it's been taken, but it comes up with a list of alternative suffixes and also names. Go ahead and try a different search if yours is taken until you've found something that fits your needs and is available.
